  6. Earlier

    Systems administration and web work

    Two decades in IT

Before these roles came years of hands-on systems administration: Linux and Windows servers in data centers, including kernel-level tuning on bare metal; hosting and web development, self-taught and refined over time; and the virtualization, backup, and monitoring practice that the later roles build on.

Scope

Where the experience applies

Four areas that have been consistent across the roles, and the kind of work each one involves.

01

Systems & hosting

Provisioning and hardening Linux and Windows servers, running HestiaCP and cPanel hosting stacks, virtualizing with Proxmox and VMware, and keeping backups tested rather than assumed.

02

Networking

UniFi wireless, switching, and firewalls; VoIP; structured cabling and rack builds; multi-site rollouts with the documentation to match.

03

Support & operations

Running a support function across distributed clients, formalizing incident and change practice with ITIL, and building the internal tools that shorten the queue.

04

Automation & software

Python and PHP tools, API integrations, n8n workflows, and AI assistants — plus the web development background that makes them usable by the people who need them.

Hiring, or need a second opinion?

I'm happy to talk through a role, an infrastructure problem, or a project that needs someone who has run this kind of environment before.
